William H. Taft Elementary currently sits on five-acre site on a hilltop within the site of the birthplace of President William Howard Taft, The William Howard Taft National Historic Site, adjacently located on Auburn Avenue.

The current Taft Elementary School is a two-building structure originally built in 1959. In the main hallway of this original 1959 building hangs a plaque commemorating Taft Elementary as the site of the original four-room schoolhouse where William Howard Taft attended grammar school from 1862-1872.

As the population expanded, a new addition was built in 1967. Also, the Cincinnati Recreation Commission (CRC) entered into an agreement with the Cincinnati Public Schools in 1976, and the school building was renovated to include the Mt. Auburn Community Center.
